Novate Mezzola

Province: Sondrio · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,814 · Postal code: 23025

For four centuries this comune was called Lezzeno superiore, from the «locus et fundus Leuzolo» that appears in deeds of 998 and 1035. Then, towards the second decade of the sixteenth century, a flood of the river of Verceia buried old Leuzolo, and the name passed to another hamlet: that «villa quae dicitur villa nova» which bishop Alberico had added to the estate around 1010, and which today is called Novate.

The comune was divided into five cantons — Novate, Codera, Cola con San Giorgio, Campo and Verceia — and each of them, with a council of its own, ran its own economy; the parish priests were elected by the cantons, and the bishop of Como gave his approval only afterwards. At the old osteria dell'Angelo, meanwhile, on 25 July 1793 the Austrians captured two French ambassadors, Sémonville and Maret: they spent twenty-nine months in captivity and were freed in exchange for Marie-Thérèse Charlotte de Bourbon, the daughter of Louis XVI.
