Sant'Angelo Limosano

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 348 · Postal code: 86020

The village claims to be the birthplace of Celestine V, the pope who gave up the throne after a few months; and it makes the claim knowing it has no papers to prove it. There is one clue, though: the parish church began in the thirteenth century as a chapel dedicated to Pietro da Morrone, and for centuries it was called San Pietro Celestino.

Rebuilt in baroque form in 1695, the church keeps a medieval wooden tabernacle and a piece of old walling with a Latin inscription. You get there by climbing the medieval bastions, three tiers of arcading that once served as walls. The population is 348.
