Giarole

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 720 · Postal code: 15036

Giarole comes from glarea, Latin for gravel, which in the local dialect is giàra. The first settlement stood by the Grana stream, between today's church of San Pietro and the cemetery; then the Sannazzaro family raised their castle and the houses, for safety, crowded against its walls. Its arms carry a gold cornucopia full of fruit and a battlemented tower.

The castle, wanted by Frederick Barbarossa in the twelfth century, still shows its brick front with the sloping plinth, the sawtooth friezes and a two-light window high on the corner. In 1854 it was turned into a country residence in neo-Gothic forms; the cellars survive below, and the chapel keeps an altarpiece by Moncalvo.
