Cisterna d'Asti

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,286 · Postal code: 14010

Cisterna is the last hilltop village on the ridge of the Rocche, and the only comune of the Asti province lying in the Roero. Once ringed by walls and steep banks, it is dominated by two buildings alone: the parish church of Santi Gervasio e Protasio and the castle, which holds the cistern that gave the place its name and appears as a fortified enclosure in a document of 911.

In 1673 Pope Clement X granted Iacopo Dal Pozzo, prince of Cisterna, the right to strike coins: the obverse bears the prince's long-haired bust, the reverse a well held up by two facing winged dragons, later the comune's arms.

Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary

📅 Every year, on 4 October

On 4 October Cisterna d'Asti celebrates its patron, Our Lady of the Rosary; the same month the village, dominated by its medieval castle, also hosts the Mercandè, a re-enactment of the coin-minting privilege granted in 1673.
