Canale

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 5,636 · Postal code: 12043

Canale is a planned town: in 1260 the free comune of Asti created it from nothing, bringing in people from Anterisio, from Loreto, from Castelletto d'Astisio, from the plateau of San Vittore and from other lesser places. Like the other new towns of the Middle Ages it has the typical concentric plan.

The place changed its crop twice. In the early twentieth century phylloxera and a fearful hailstorm, the one of 1906, brought the vineyards to their knees, and peaches took over: so was born the fame of Canale del Pesco, with a daily market and fruit going abroad. Later the orchards shrank and the vine came back, with Arneis.
