Moretta

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,237 · Postal code: 12033

Three explanations of the name are offered. The first takes it from moreta, land planted with mulberries, and cites the arms in support, where a mulberry appears with the motto Natura perficitur arte; but Moretta was already called this before mulberries were grown in Piedmont, which only began in the sixteenth century.

The second makes it a base of the Saracen Moors, though very little is known for certain about their raids here. The third, the most accepted, reads Moretta as a diminutive of morra, the rural halt where Benedictine monks stopped with their flocks. In 1362 the fief went to the Solari counts, and in 1369 the mercenaries of Facino Cane stormed the town.
