Tarantasca

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,009 · Postal code: 12020

Tarantasca lies thirteen kilometres north of Cuneo, on the left bank of the Grana, on ground so level that the whole territory drops barely fifty metres from end to end. During the last siege of Cuneo, on the eve of the battle of Marengo, the village changed hands between Austrians and French, and a few skirmishes were fought here.

Independence came late, and by decree: on 11 January 1808 a Napoleonic order raised Tarantasca to a comune, and the first council was installed that March. When the Empire fell Busca tried once more to take it back, but on 8 May 1817 Vittorio Emanuele I reconfirmed the separation, and the village began to grow.
