Bairo

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 816 · Postal code: 10010

The people of Bairo are nicknamed tirapere, stone-throwers: the old villagers are said to have had their own ideas about hospitality and to have met strangers with stones, above all those courting the local girls. The name is read two ways: the old Barrium, a walled place, or the Bauivarii, Bavarian troops guarding the via Romea.

From 1452 a distillery produced for centuries the Amaro Bairo, on a recipe attributed to Pietro Michaeli, known as Pietro di Bairo. For nearly thirty years in the twentieth century the village and Torre Canavese were one comune, Bairo Torre. The parish church of San Giorgio martire, of 1777, shows a bare brick front, unplastered and curved.
