Bussoleno

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 6,363 · Postal code: 10053

Bussoleno lies in the Susa valley, and for centuries it grew on the people passing through: the Via Francigena coming down from the Mont Cenis crossed the Dora Riparia here, and the town lived on trade and hospitality. The name comes from the Piedmontese bussolin, meaning hawthorn; by other accounts from box, the plant that figures on the town's arms.

It stayed a modest fortified village until the railway came through, first the line to Susa and then the one to France through the Fréjus tunnel: at the junction of the two, Bussoleno station became important, and the town grew along with the station, the workshop and the cotton and steel industries.
