San Giorio di Susa

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,040 · Postal code: 10050

On 20 February 1226, outside the church, with the men of San Giorio gathered in council, Count Thomas I of Savoy announced the founding of a new town on the mollare; until then the settlement had probably been scattered and the church stood on its own. Scattered on the mountain it has remained: twenty-seven hamlets, nine lived in all year, up towards Punta Cristalliera.

The old core gathers around the castle, raised in the thirteenth century on one such mollare: the French general Catinat destroyed it in 1691, the restoration of the nineteen-seventies put it back up. Facing the parish church, which kept its Romanesque bell tower when it was rebuilt, the Conte chapel holds Franco-Piedmontese frescoes dated 1328.
