Sorso

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 14,300 · Postal code: 07037

The name of Sorso tastes of salt, and perhaps it truly is salt: the most accepted hypothesis traces it to an Indo-European root meaning salty, because until the nineteenth century salt was extracted along this coast and glasswort was grown here. The village appears for the first time in the Condaghe of San Pietro di Silki, and again in that of San Nicola di Trullas, where a bequest is recorded that is worth more than any description: lady Iorgia d'Athen, on her deathbed, gives away her house at Sorso with everything around it, vineyards, fields, courtyard, servants, a reed bed and a palm grove. That list holds the entire economy of a twelfth-century Sardinian village.

In 1236 a boy king was killed here. Barisone III, judge of Torres, was fifteen years old when a popular uprising stirred up by the Doria and the Malaspina reached him at Sorso; he was buried in the church of San Pantaleo, and since he was the only male child the judgedom passed by acclamation to his sister Adelasia. Two centuries later, in 1436, Sorso and Sennori were sold together to Gonario Gambella, and from then on the two villages shared the same fate: the arms of Sorso still bear a leg piece of armour, which is the drawing of the buyer's surname.
