The name comes from the Madonna della Catena, whose sanctuary is the town's heart: Aci Catena is one of the "seven Aci", the villages born from the break-up of the ancient land of Aci — the one of the myth of Acis and Galatea, the shepherd turned into a river by the jealous Cyclops. The 1693 earthquake refounded it in Baroque forms.
