For more than twenty years Europe's absolute heat record belonged to this town: 48.5 degrees, recorded by the local station in August 1999. Only Floridia, in the Syracuse area, beat it on 11 August 2021, with 48.8.
The town itself was born of a will: on 21 July 1713 the baroness Anna Maria Statella-Paternò ordered that a new settlement be founded in the fief of Melinventre, with its own church and archpriest. Her son obtained the licence from the emperor in 1726, effective from 24 January 1731, and built the palace, the first houses and the straight streets around the square. There are 4,999 residents.

Catenanuova celebrates Saint Prosper the martyr, together with Mary Most Holy of Grace, from the second-to-last to the last Sunday of September; the feast was established in 1752 by the town's founder, who brought the saint's relics from the catacombs of San Callisto in Rome.
A golden half-moon of shortcrust dusted with icing sugar, hiding cocoa, chopped almonds and chickpea flour: the sweet of Agira, in the Erei mountains, a recognised traditional product with its own municipal denomination.
