Between 572 and 590 AD, the historian Gregory of Tours recorded a grand church on Lipari built over the burial site of Saint Bartholomew, whose lead sarcophagus was said to have drifted across the sea to the island. As the largest and oldest house of worship in Lipari, the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Bartholomew stands at the center of the Citadel, serving as a co-cathedral for the Archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela.
What to see
The church occupies a commanding position within the Citadel, with its main facade facing northwest over the flight of steps that leads down to the lower town. Beyond its architectural presence as Lipari's mother church, the site is deeply rooted in early medieval hagiography. Accounts by Byzantine writers such as Theodore the Studite and Joseph the Hymnographer describe how local Bishop Agatho discovered the apostle's remains on the shore. Local tradition—formalized in a 1617 notarized act by Bishop Alfonso Vidal—holds that the saint's vessel arrived on February 13, 264, at Portinenti beach accompanied by four other martyrs' arks, and was brought up to the sanctuary site by two chaste heifers after human efforts failed to move it.
