The largest of the Aeolians is the capital of an archipelago UNESCO-listed since 2000: from the castle on the acropolis — inhabited for six thousand years — the Aeolian archaeological museum unfolds one of the Mediterranean's richest prehistory collections, obsidian first: the volcanic glass that made Lipari a trading power before metal existed.

On 24 August Lipari celebrates Saint Bartholomew, to whom the co-cathedral of 1094 inside the Castello is dedicated. The saint also appears on the town's coat of arms, at the gate of the towered castle.
