Built in the 12th century under King William II alongside the Cathedral of Monreale, the Castellaccio di Monreale — also known as the Castle of San Benedetto — is the only surviving example of a fortified military monastery in western Sicily. Standing 764 metres above sea level atop Mount Caputo, the structure dominates the Oreto Valley and the limestone heights of the Monti di Palermo, originally serving as a key stronghold in the Norman territorial defence system established after the conquest of Sicily.
What to see
The fortress extends over an area of 2,295 square metres on an irregular 80 by 30 metre rectangular footprint. Its defensive nature is defined by outer walls averaging 1.5 metres in thickness, seven projecting curtain towers, deeply splayed loop windows, and an entrance tower with a bayonet access layout. Built from rough, unpolished stone without decorative ashlar corners, the complex housed an internal chapel with a central nave and three apses. Along the inner perimeter walls, rooms set aside for the monks open onto a corridor that leads to a porticoed courtyard serving as the monastic cloister.
Visiting
Damaged in 1370 during an assault by Giovanni Chiaramonte's army and used as a refuge by King Martin I in 1393, the castle was abandoned in the 16th century. In 1897, the municipality sold the site to the Club Alpino Siciliano, which commissioned architect Giuseppe Patricolo to restore its structure. Reopened in 1906 as a mountain station and hiking destination, subsequent restorations supervised by the Superintendence of Monuments in 1996 and 2009 restored public accessibility to both the northeast and northwest towers.
