In Monreale the name of Saint Castrensis appears twice: in this church in the historic centre, which forms a single complex with a monastery of Benedictine nuns, and inside the cathedral, where one of the chapels listed among the building's treasures — alongside those of Saint Benedict and the Most Holy Crucifix — is dedicated to the same saint.
The setting is the town created by William II in the twelfth century: tradition has it that a dream in 1171, in which the Madonna revealed to the king the hiding place of a treasure, set off the construction of the cathedral, the archbishop's palace and the cloister. Since 2015 the cathedral has been part of the UNESCO site that also includes Arab-Norman Palermo and the cathedral of Cefalù.
What to see
What defines the place is the pairing of church and convent. The presence of Benedictine nuns extends the vocation Monreale was born with: in 1176 William II settled a hundred monks from the abbey of Cava in the town, led by Abbot Theobald, to serve his new cathedral. Around that foundation Monreale kept building churches and religious houses for centuries, and the San Castrense complex belongs to that long monastic thread.
Visiting
The church stands in the fabric of the historic centre, a few minutes on foot from the cathedral; Monreale sits at about 310 metres at the foot of Monte Caputo, roughly four kilometres from Palermo. The cathedral's 7,584 square metres of mosaics will absorb most of your time; this is the quieter counterpoint, and it asks for only a few minutes more on a walk through the surrounding streets, lined with churches mostly built in the early eighteenth century.
