Roger II intended it as a manifesto: the cathedral he began raising in 1131, its apse filled by a golden Christ Pantocrator, ranks among the peaks of Arab-Norman art and joined the UNESCO list with Palermo and Monreale in 2015. Beneath its two towers, the medieval town slides down to a little harbour where houses touch the water.
Above everything looms the Rocca, the crag that repays the climb with views to the Aeolian Islands. A medieval washhouse, a long beach right in the centre and trattorias on the pier complete one of Sicily's best formulas: big monuments, small scale.
Greek settlers picked the name: Kephaloídion, from kephalé, "head" — their reading of the Rocca, the crag of some 270 metres looming over the rooftops. On its summit, next to the medieval fortifications, stands a megalithic building known as the Temple of Diana, tied to an ancient water cult.
Legend has the cathedral begin as a sailor's vow: caught in a storm at sea, Roger II promised a church to the Saviour and from 1131 had it built where he supposedly came ashore. The golden Christ Pantocrator mosaic in the apse dates from 1148, and since 2015 the building has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site within the Arab-Norman route it shares with Palermo and Monreale.
The twentieth century left two odd claims to fame. English occultist Aleister Crowley ran his "Abbey of Thelema" here from 1920 until the Fascist government expelled him from Italy in 1923; in 1988 Giuseppe Tornatore shot scenes of the Oscar-winning Cinema Paradiso in town, including the open-air screening at the old harbour.
