Monreale is more than its Norman cathedral: no comune in the Metropolitan City of Palermo has more outlying hamlets, and some of its churches stand in the hill villages rather than in the monumental centre. The church of Sant'Anna is in Pioppo, the most populous of these frazioni, home to around 5,500 people at 527 metres above sea level, just under eight kilometres from the historic centre.
Inside is the work that earns the detour: a fine late-Baroque marble statue of Saint Benedict.
What to see
The statue is the point of the visit, and its subject is no accident in this territory. Monreale grew up in the twelfth century around a Benedictine abbey, after William II summoned a hundred monks from the abbey of Cava, led by Abbot Theobald, to serve his great new church; the abbot reached the town on 20 March 1176 and received the title of Lord of the City. Meeting Saint Benedict again in a village church eight kilometres out shows how deeply that monastic imprint marked the whole of Monreale's territory.
Visiting
From Monreale, which sits at about 310 metres at the foot of Monte Caputo, the road climbs to Pioppo's 527 metres. The church itself asks for a short stop, best folded into a wider itinerary: the cathedral and cloister in the centre and, to stay on the Benedictine trail, San Martino delle Scale, the hamlet at 589 metres known for its monastic complex, less than four kilometres from the town centre. Monreale itself is about four kilometres from Palermo, so the whole loop fits comfortably into half a day.

Come to Pioppo after the cathedral, not before: recognising the founder of Western monasticism in a village statue, eight kilometres from the mosaics commissioned by William II, closes the circle of Monreale's story. Bear in mind that village churches keep less predictable hours than the major monuments — service times are your best chance of finding the door open.
