The patron of Poppi is Blessed Torello da Poppi, celebrated on 16 March, the day of his death at Avellaneto in 1282. Born in Poppi around 1202 to a wealthy noble family, his path mirrored that of Saint Francis of Assisi: first a wild youth, he later converted to a life of asceticism and penance, lived entirely in a hermitage on the Pratomagno.
He gained fame as a wolf tamer, animals with which he is often depicted, according to his best-known miracle: taming a wolf that was about to devour a child. After his death, popular tradition began venerating him as a saint, although he was never officially canonized. The town also holds the Castello dei Conti Guidi and the Convento di Certomondo.
