The patron saints of Sansepolcro are Saint John the Evangelist, celebrated on 27 December as both a civic and religious holiday, and Saint Romuald the Abbot, co-patron, celebrated on 1 September.
A driving factor in the town's development was the privilege of holding a weekly Saturday market and an annual fair at the start of September, granted to the abbot by Emperor Conrad II in 1038. The revival of the town's cultural life was also aided by the 1951 transformation of the Palio della Balestra into a historical costume re-enactment, alongside the Flag Games. In May, the «Sapori di vini» wine fair is also held, and in July the Kilowatt Festival, dedicated to contemporary performing arts, which over more than twenty years has hosted nearly 4,000 Italian and international artists. The town also holds the Cathedral of Sansepolcro and the Torre di Berta.
