Monteforte d'Alpone

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 8,410 · Postal code: 37032

In 1207 the Commune of Verona rid itself of Monteforte by handing it to Bishop Adelardo, and in exchange took jurisdiction over Legnago and Tregnago: a swap of villages. The bishops kept it, with a vicar who administered justice, until the fall of the Republic of Venice, nearly six hundred years later.

Near the bridge over the Alpone stands a shrine dedicated to Saint John Nepomuk as early as 1634, almost a century before the Bohemian priest was canonised: it served against the floods of the torrent, and the water explains the haste. Above the village rises the parish bell tower, built between 1894 and 1897 and seventy-nine metres tall, among the highest in Veneto. All around, the vineyards of Soave.
