Laghi

Province: Vicenza · Region: Veneto · Population: 123 · Postal code: 36010

It is the smallest comune in Veneto by number of inhabitants, and the name is the first thing you see: two small alpine lakes in a hollow, with the village on their shores. In the twelfth century woodcutters and miners came here from Germany, and their language has stayed in the surnames — Peterlin, Rader, Leder, Mogentale — and in a few words of the local dialect.

Self-government came late: only in 1689 did Venice allow Laghi an administration of its own. And when the Republic fell, these mountain people did not take it well: in the summer of 1809 they came down armed on Thiene and Schio against the French, protesting against the taxes and the conscription, shouting «Long live Saint Mark». They were called brigands, scattered, and their leaders severely punished.
