Read more →On 12 May 1752, while the men of the village had gone down to the market at Thiene, an armed expedition destroyed the forty-four houses of the settlement and deported the women, the children and the old people down the valley. It was not a raid: it was the execution of an agreement between the Republic of Venice and the Empire, which to end centuries of quarrels over pastures had ordered the people of the Laste to leave.
The village was rebuilt around 1760, at the Republic's expense, down on the banks of the Astico, where until then there had been only the stones of a landslide: a far poorer place than the old one. That descent is where today's name comes from. Austria paid compensation of fifteen thousand nine hundred florins, and the Republic spent it buying back for the villagers the mountain they had lost.
