Fénis Castle, Fénis: visitor guide

In 1392, serving as the inspector of fortifications for the Savoy court, Bonifacio I of Challant initiated a massive building campaign that transformed a relatively simple family keep into a lavish, courtly residence. Unlike the nearby strongholds of Verrès and Ussel, which sit atop inaccessible rocky promontories, Fénis Castle rests on a completely defenseless low knoll about 13 kilometers from Aosta. Its elaborate architecture was not designed for military purposes but as a prestigious administrative seat meant to project wealth and awe the local population. The site’s recorded history begins in 1242 when a document mentions a 'castrum Fenitii' owned by the Viscount of Aosta, Gotofredo di Challant. Most of the present pentagonal layout, however, was commissioned by Aymon of Challant starting in 1340. Following a long period of decline, the Challant family sold the heavily indebted estate in 1716 to Count Baldassarre Castellar of Saluzzo Paesana for 90,000 lire. The once-grand court was reduced to a rural dwelling, serving as a stable and a barn. Its salvation came in 1895 when architect Alfredo d'Andrade purchased the ruined structure for the Italian State for 15,000 lire, launching a long restoration process.

What to see

The castle is defined by its pentagonal keep, enclosed by a double boundary wall with battlements and a series of watchtowers linked by a walkway. The most formidable towers, located on the south and west corners, are equipped with arrow slits and machicolations. The north wall facing the valley road features five circular towers, though one was added during a 1930s restoration led by Cesare Maria De Vecchi and Vittorio Mesturino, who also created the current southern entrance portal. While walking between the boundary walls, look up to spot several stone masks carved into the masonry, originally intended to ward off evil spirits. The core of the residence is the inner courtyard, defined by a semi-circular stone staircase and two tiers of wooden balconies. A striking 15th-century fresco of Saint George killing the dragon commands the top of the stairs. The balcony walls are richly decorated with sages, prophets, and old French proverbs, executed by the Piedmontese painter Giacomo Jaquerio, his school, and Giacomino da Ivrea. The interior layout accommodated about sixty people across three floors. The ground floor housed the garrison and service areas, including the weaponry, a kitchen, a woodshed, and a rainwater storage tank. The first floor was reserved for the lords, containing their private chambers, the court of justice, and a chapel adorned with Jaquerio's frescoes. The rooms are outfitted with period wood furniture acquired from antique markets during the 1930s restorations.

Visiting

Now owned by the Autonomous Region Aosta Valley, the castle operates as a museum. Access to the interior is strictly limited to guided tours. These tours cover the courtyard, the ground floor service areas, and the first-floor noble rooms. The attic on the third floor, historically used as the servant's quarters, is not open to the public.

Pay close attention to the spatial arrangement and wooden balconies of the inner courtyard. Years before Alfredo d'Andrade purchased the castle to save it from ruin, he was so impressed by this specific courtyard that he used it as the precise architectural model for the Borgo Medievale in Turin, constructed for the 1884 Italian General Exhibition.
