Grottole celebrates Saint Roch on 16 August; devotion to the French pilgrim saint spread after the plague of 1655, and his church holds a huge 17th-century polyptych of the Works of Mercy.

The patron saint of Grottole is Saint Roch, celebrated on 16 August. The church dedicated to him, once called Santa Maria la Grotta, took its present name after devotion to the French pilgrim saint spread following the plague of 1655: with three naves, its main nave holds a precious and huge 17th-century polyptych by the artist Pietro Antonio Ferro, depicting the Seven Corporal Works of Mercy, while the left nave, the only one decorated with stucco, holds the altar of Saint Roch and that of the Assumption of Mary.

On the small hill of the Motta, set apart from the town centre, stands the Sichinulfo castle, which tradition holds was built in 851 by the Lombard prince Sichinolfo of Salerno: it has a central square-based tower and numerous adjoining rooms that formed the body of the palace, which in the early 19th century comprised thirteen upper rooms before its change of use.
