Bargagli

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 2,810 · Postal code: 16021

Salt and goods bound for Piacenza passed through Bargagli. Three of its bridges can still be crossed, in the hamlets of Mulino, La Presa and Sottovaxe, and their workmanship suggests the village goes back to Roman times.

The name comes from the mountain on whose slopes it lies, the Bragalla, and appears for the first time in a document of 916, the year the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta was consecrated, one of the oldest in Liguria. At Viganego, beside the church of San Siro, there is a stone nativity scene that reproduces the houses of the valley and that the village keeps enlarging. The population is 2,810.
