The Assumption of the Virgin, patroness of one of Liguria's oldest parish churches

The patroness of Bargagli is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, celebrated on 15 August. The parish pieve dedicated to her, in the main village, is one of the oldest pievi in Liguria: the place name Bargagli, derived from the name of Monte Bragalla on whose slopes the town developed, is first mentioned in a document from 916, the year in which the local pieve was consecrated, whose territory remained under the rule of the Republic of Genoa until the 18th century, within the jurisdiction of the podesteria of Albaro and Bisagno. The church, completely transformed during the 17th century, today has a three-nave structure, with a rose-window portal and a spired bell tower; next to it a building was constructed in the 15th century that became the seat of the local confraternity of the Disciplinanti.
