Cherasco

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 8,652 · Postal code: 12062

Cherasco stands on a plateau where the Stura di Demonte flows into the Tanaro. It was founded in 1243 at the wish of Manfredi II Lancia, imperial vicar of Frederick II, and of Sarlo di Drua, podestà of Alba, beside a Roman-age village called Clerascum; it soon went over to the Guelph side, betraying its Ghibelline foundation.

The big history passed through Palazzo Salmatoris: there in 1631 were signed the accords that ended the war of the Mantuan and Montferrat succession, there the Holy Shroud was kept in 1706, in the small room called del Silenzio frescoed by Sebastiano Taricco, and there Napoleon lodged in 1796, when he imposed the armistice of Cherasco that redrew the Savoy dominions.
