Bidonì

Province: Oristano · Region: Sardinia · Population: 147 · Postal code: 09080

It is one of the smallest comuni in Sardinia by area, together with Setzu, Las Plassas, Nureci and Modolo, and it lies in the Barigadu, above the river Tirso. Where the church of San Pietro now stands there was a Benedictine monastery in the Middle Ages; the village later became an Aragonese fief, and in 1839, when the feudal system fell, the inhabitants bought themselves out from the last lords.

The Sardinian spoken here is the variety linguists call limba de mesania, the language in between: the band where the Logudorese of the north and the Campidanese of the south meet and mix. The border between the island's two great varieties is not a clean line but a strip of villages like this one, and Bidonì is inside it.
