Located 32 kilometers northwest of Catania, directly between Adrano and Santa Maria di Licodia, Biancavilla stems from a distinct historical background. The municipality was established and historically populated by the Arbëreshë, an Albanian ethno-linguistic community.
Originally known by the Albanian name of Callìcari and referred to as Biancavidda in local Sicilian dialect, it is now home to roughly 23,700 people. This settlement remains an integral part of the metropolitan area, reflecting an unusual migration history within the region.

Biancavilla celebrates Saint Placidus on 5 and 6 October; he was declared patron in 1709 by the bishop of Catania for having spared the town from the 1693 earthquake, while the basilica of Santa Maria dell'Elemosina holds the icon brought by the Albanian refugees who founded the town in 1488.
