The patron saint of Fiumefreddo di Sicilia is Saint Joseph, celebrated on 19 March: he was chosen as patron saint when the church dedicated to Mary Most Holy of the Rosary became the town's mother church. This church was built beside a tower that the barons had erected at the end of the 16th century to garrison the area, in the nucleus that gave rise to today's Castello district: around the tower a small church and a cemetery were built, the first core of the future town, while the town was originally called «Castel Fiumefreddo».
Not far from the centre, the Castello degli Schiavi still preserves today, on its loggia, the statues of two Turks who seem to gaze towards the sea: according to local tradition they were placed there in memory of some freed slaves, hence the building's name, today privately owned by the Platania family, barons of Santa Lucia. In the castle's church, every first Sunday of September, the traditional procession in honour of Mary Most Holy of the Chain is also held.
