In 1699 prince Gaspare La Grutta obtained the licence to settle and had a town made to order: a hundred houses, fourteen shops, a fountain and a church dedicated to Saint Rosalia. Soon after he sold it to the Marziani, who kept it for a century.
The name comes from the castle of Roccella, down by the sea and older than the town: Norman, half ruined, it looks out over the coast between Cefalù and Termini. Roccella may already appear in a poem by the troubadour Raimbaut de Vaqueiras, who passed this way in 1194 with the expedition to Sicily. There are 6,918 residents.
