On 14 April 1788 the people of Isnello went to the notary and bought their town back: tired of the counts and of their right to make law, they paid up and undid the feudal bond with their own hands. The county had been created in 1625, by privilege of Philip IV.
The name comes from the water: the stream that runs down from the Madonie and squeezes into a narrow canyon between the castle rock and the wall of Montagna Grotta Grande. Below, the mountain is full of caves — the Abisso del Vento drops deep and is still largely unexplored. Here, in 1900, Vincent Impellitteri was born, who would become mayor of New York. There are 1,598 residents.

Isnello celebrates Saint Nicholas of Bari, bishop of Myra, on 6 December, in the ancient mother church; the town, dominated by the ruins of a Norman castle, was sold in 1377 to Francesco II Ventimiglia and later passed to the Filangeri family.
