In 1543 Charles V raised Giuliana from a county to a marquisate, and in 1997 the town staged that ceremony again: the re-enactment of the Status Julianae was held on 3 August, inside the Frederician castle just restored and opened «with the works still going on».
The name comes from the gens Julia, who owned the hamlet on the hill. It was theirs until 1185; then king William the Good gave it to the bishop of Monreale. The castle was wanted by Frederick II for its position: from the Rocca you control the whole valley down to the sea of the Agrigento coast. The town sits at 750 metres. There are 2,032 residents.
