The patron of Prizzi is Saint George the martyr, celebrated on 23 April in the mother church of San Giorgio Megalomartire.
But Prizzi's best-known tradition is another one, tied to Easter: the Ballo dei Diavoli, the Dance of the Devils, also called «Easter in Prizzi». From the morning of Easter Sunday two masked devils, dressed in red, and Death, dressed in the typical ochre yellow, roam undisturbed through the town's streets, playing tricks and holding passers-by, who are released only in exchange for an alms, in money or sweets. Angels escorting the statues stand against them: it is the contrast between the two groups, marked by precise ritual movements, that gives the dance its name.
