Impossible geography

Monteviasco, a thousand steps and a cable car idle from 2018 to 2025

No road reaches Monteviasco, a hamlet of Curiglia con Monteviasco in the province of Varese, Lombardy, 950 metres up above the Val Veddasca on the Swiss border. Until 1989 the only way up from Ponte di Piero was a mule track laid out in 1813, roughly a thousand steps. Then came the cable car: 981 metres of cable, a 400-metre climb, fifteen standing passengers. On 12 November 2018 a maintenance worker was crushed by the cabin at the lower station and the line stayed shut for almost seven years, until 10 August 2025. In the meantime the fifteen or so residents, mostly elderly, went back to counting steps.

Bell-tower rivalries

The contested cannolo: Caltanissetta, Palermo and the kanojët of Piana degli Albanesi

The cannolo has more homelands than one shell can hold. Some food experts place its birth in Caltanissetta, in Sicily, between 827 and 1091, between an emir's harem and a convent of cloistered nuns; on 11 September 2022 the city made one 21.43 metres long, a record Guinness certified on 22 January 2024. Palermo replies that its convents and pastry shops gave the sweet its shape and fame. Then there is Piana degli Albanesi, near Palermo, founded in 1488 by Albanian refugees who still speak Arbëresh and pray in the Byzantine rite: here the cannolo is called kanojët, comes filled with ricotta, and the town is known for it. Born for Carnival, it is now fried all year round.

The volt, a surname from Como printed on every battery in the world

Every battery, charger and wall socket carries the surname of a man from Como, in Lombardy. Alessandro Volta, born there on 18 February 1745, built his pile at the end of 1799 and announced it to the Royal Society in London in a letter dated 20 March 1800; on 7 November 1801 he demonstrated it to Napoleon at the Institut de France. In the 1880s the International Electrical Congress made his name the unit of electrical potential. Como paid him back with the Tempio Voltiano on the lakefront, funded by the industrialist Francesco Somaini and opened on 15 July 1928 for the centenary of his death: 234 objects inside, and the temple itself on the back of the 10,000-lire note until 2002.
