Columbus makes landfall on 12 October 1492; on his birthplace Genoa has the papers, Cogoleto the house in via Rati, and the queue of claimants is long
At 2 a.m. on 12 October 1492 the lookout on the Pinta, Rodrigo de Triana, sighted the coast of Guanahani. Since then half the world has argued over where Columbus was born. Genoa has the documents: a birth between August and October 1451 and his words in the 1498 deed of primogeniture, “siendo yo nacido en Genova”. Cogoleto, in Liguria too, answers with the house in via Rati, decorated from 1650 by a priest of the Colombo family, and a 1638 atlas calling it “Christophori Columbi patria”. His son Ferdinand had already listed Nervi, Savona and Piacenza; then came Cuccaro in Monferrato, Calvi in Corsica, Catalans, Portuguese and Galicians. The dispute is not over.
