Airole

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 461 · Postal code: 18030

Airole is a village built to order: in 1498 the parliament of Ventimiglia handed out land to thirteen heads of household from the surrounding villages so that they would put up houses there and come to live in them, with the obligation to sell only to local people. The last of the twenty-five lots was assigned in 1510.

Earlier still, the Carthusians of Pesio kept here the depot for the salt that passed between the coast and Piedmont; they sold it to Ventimiglia in 1435 for a hundred and fifty gold florins. In 1747 Franco-Spanish troops destroyed the sixteenth-century bridge over the Roia: the inhabitants rebuilt it themselves in 1754. The population is 461.
