The patroness of Varazze is Saint Catherine of Siena, celebrated on 30 April. A town sanctuary is dedicated to her, built in the 17th century, its façade completely remade in 1940.
Alongside her the town also venerates as protector the blessed Jacopo da Varagine: in 1875 the collegiate church of Sant'Ambrogio, the religious heart of the old town, was embellished with statues of them both. The collegiate church, dating from the Middle Ages with a Baroque façade and a Romanesque-Gothic bell tower, keeps a polyptych by Giovanni Barbagelata with Saint Ambrose, saints and musician angels, and a panel by Luca Cambiaso.
