Scala dei Turchi

📍 Realmonte, Sicile · 88/100

A cliff of white marl shaped by the wind into soft steps descending to a turquoise sea: the Scala dei Turchi owes its name to the Saracen pirates who sheltered here, and its world fame partly to Camilleri's pages, which gave it to inspector Montalbano. The marl is soft and precious: to protect it, access onto the cliff is periodically restricted.

The full spectacle is in any case from below and from the side, the white wall cutting the blue.

Our tip: arrive from Majata Beach to the west and walk toward the Scala: the frontal view at sunset, when the marl turns pink, is the moment you'll understand why everyone seeks it.
