The patron saint of Lumarzo is Saint Camillus de Lellis, celebrated on the first Monday after the Feast of the Madonna del Bosco, which in turn falls on the first Sunday following 8 September: the Marian feast's name comes from the sanctuary of Nostra Signora del Bosco, in the hamlet of Pannesi, whose construction is linked, according to popular tradition, to an apparition of the Virgin Mary that took place on 12 September 1555 to the deaf-mute farmer Felice Olcese, who on that occasion miraculously regained the use of speech: the Madonna is said to have asked him for the gift of a sheep and the building of a sanctuary, herself indicating the place and dimensions with a sprig of oak.
The sanctuary's main festivities are celebrated on 19 May, the feast of the Marian apparition, and on 12 September, the feast of the Holy Name of Mary, when a statue of the Madonna della Misericordia is carried in procession. Lumarzo also comprises the hamlets of Boasi, Ferriere, the town hall's seat, Tasso and Vallebuona, with other historic churches such as that of San Tommaso at Boasi, consecrated in 1917 by the Bishop of Chiavari Giovanni Gamberoni, and that of Santo Stefano at Pannesi.
