Cossato

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 14,810 · Postal code: 13836

The parish church of the Assumption was already standing before the year 1000. In 1612 it collapsed, and two years later they rebuilt it: the patronal feast on 15 August has remained the day the town recognises itself, so much so that a local pastry shop invented Assumption biscuits for the occasion.

Cossato, 14,810 residents, is the second town of the Biella area by population and economy and lies at 257 metres, where the Mosso valley opens onto the plain. To the east begins the Baragge nature reserve; on the surrounding hills nebbiolo is grown, and the wines fall under the Coste della Sesia denomination.

Fun facts about Cossato

The patron is the Assumption of Mary and the feast falls on 15 August. A recent sweet revolves around that date too: the Assumption biscuits, created in a local pastry shop in 2014 precisely for the patronal feast and sold by the parish church during the holidays.

Cossato's historic sweet, however, is another: the mantovane, recognised as a Traditional Agri-Food Product. They are hemispheres of puff pastry enclosing a soft filling of almonds and jam, and they take their name from their shape, which recalls mantua curtains; they are made at carnival time. Among the other things of the house are bagna càuda and san carlin, a spreadable cheese of fresh tomino, garlic and chilli.
