On 26 October 1853, Baron Enrico Pirajno di Mandralisca drafted his will, leaving his residence and private collection to the people of Cefalù to establish an educational institution. As the town's only museum, the Museo Mandralisca remains in the founder's original home, housing an interdisciplinary assemblage created in the nineteenth century to promote public literacy and learning.
What to see
The museum displays reflect the baron's wide-ranging intellectual pursuits, spanning fine art, archaeology, numismatics, scientific instruments, period furniture, and a malacological collection of roughly 2,000 shells reorganized in 1976. The highlight of the picture gallery is a portrait attributed to Antonello da Messina, placed under heritage protection in 1916 and later featured in Vincenzo Consolo's novel Il sorriso dell'ignoto marinaio. Notable antiquities include a Campanian bell crater portraying an old tuna vendor, also listed in 1916, alongside two Hellenistic sarcophagi exhibited since 1977 and a Roman mosaic discovered during municipal excavations in 1933. The coin cabinet features 2,526 pieces arranged in display cases since the mid-1920s. On the ground floor, visitors can enter the Mandralisca family oil storage room, restored in 1997, which retains its large semi-buried jars. The building also houses the foundation's historical library, holding rare items such as a 1643 portolan chart.
Visiting
The museum occupies the baron's historic residence, which was expanded into an adjacent property acquired in 1939 and subsequently renovated according to plans by architect Pasquale Culotta. Welcoming around 20,000 visitors annually, the complex integrates the museum rooms with the foundation's public library. In summer, the street in front of the building hosts temporary displays of contemporary art and local cultural events.
