Pizzomunno and old Vieste

📍 Vieste, Apulia · 81/100

A white limestone monolith twenty-five metres tall planted at the beach's edge: Pizzomunno is Vieste's giant, and the legend of the fisherman petrified for love of Cristalda — set to music at Sanremo by Max Gazzè — is the Gargano's founding myth. Above, old Vieste clings to the point with white lanes, arches and the sheer "ripa" cliff.

At sunset the monolith blushes pink as the village lights its lamps: a double show.

Our tip: the classic photo is from the top of the Love Stairway in the old town; a swim at the giant's feet early in the morning, when Castello beach is half empty, is the right way to greet him.
