Saepinum Archaeological Area

📍 Sepino, Molise · 78/100

A complete Roman town — forum, basilica, theatre, baths, walls with four gates — amid the pastures of Molise, without ticket office or crowds: Saepinum is the "poor man's Pompeii" only for those who have never been. Risen along the Pescasseroli-Candela drove road, it lived on transhumance; on its gates, the inscriptions regulating the flocks' passage survive.

The farmhouses built into the theatre, laundry drying on the tiers, are a short-circuit of centuries worth the journey alone.

Our tip: go at summer sunset, when the stone warms and the flocks truly come home: time bends. Entry free, silence included; the small museum helps you read the stones.
