Hadrian, the architect emperor, built between 118 and 138 not a villa but an ideal city: 120 hectares quoting the empire's beloved places — the Egyptian Canopus with its canal edged by caryatids, the Athenian Pecile, the Maritime Theatre, an island refuge ringed by water where the master of the world withdrew to think alone. UNESCO-listed since 1999.
It is a site to walk slowly, among centuries-old olive trees and fragments surfacing everywhere.
Our tip: three hours minimum, comfortable shoes and water; the scale model at the entrance helps you read what once was. With Villa d'Este ten minutes away, Tivoli asks for the full day — and deserves every hour.
