Hadrian, the architect emperor, built between 118 and 138 not a villa but an ideal city: 120 hectares quoting the empire's beloved places — the Egyptian Canopus with its canal edged by caryatids, the Athenian Pecile, the Maritime Theatre, an island refuge ringed by water where the master of the world withdrew to think alone. UNESCO-listed since 1999.
It is a site to walk slowly, among centuries-old olive trees and fragments surfacing everywhere.
