During the Byzantine era, Caltavuturo was established as a strategic stronghold beneath the prominent Rocca di Sciara. Over the centuries, the settlement was shaped by a succession of different ruling powers.
Today, the town has around 4,000 residents and lies within the Madonie Park in the inland Himera Valley. Situated in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, it borders Polizzi Generosa, Scillato, and Sclafani Bagni.
