Commissioned to commemorate a 1524 naval victory and the safe return of the fleet to Palermo attributed to divine intervention, the church of Santa Maria di Porto Salvo was designed by Antonello Gagini in the first quarter of the 16th century. Construction began in 1526 and stretched over three decades under the management of church treasurer Giovanni di Blasco, who engaged Tuscan and Carrara craftsmen including Santino di Chicco di Petrancione and Fedele da Carona. Following Gagini's death in 1536, the project was carried forward by his sons Antonino and Giacomo. In 1581, Viceroy Marcantonio Colonna ordered the extension of the Cassaro street, which required cutting away a portion of the church and altering its profile. The building stands in Palermo's Kalsa district.
What to see
The exterior features two primary facades: a tripartite front along Via Portosalvo and a Cassaro facade showcasing a 1559 portal by Giacomo Gagini, crowned by a small bell tower. The northern side features the Fontana della Doganella, crafted from grey Billiemi marble. The 16th-century truncation of the structure led to the addition of an upper attic level detailed with pilasters and a secondary cornice. Inside, marble columns separate three naves flanked by chapels with Late Gothic elements. Antonio Scaglione painted the frescoed starry vault spanning the ceiling. Prominent artworks inside include a 1590 Annunciation by Giovanni Paolo Fondulli, a Madonna of the Rosary, a wooden triptych depicting the Virgin with Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint Anthony, a Last Supper, and several paintings from the Novelli school.
