William II demanded in 1174 a cathedral to outshine Palermo, and his Arab, Byzantine and Latin craftsmen delivered the impossible: six thousand four hundred square metres of gold mosaics, the entire Bible told in images beneath the gaze of the Christ Pantocrator blessing from the apse. UNESCO-listed since 2015 within the Arab-Norman circuit — for many, quite simply Italy's most beautiful church.
What to see
The apse Pantocrator, nearly seven metres of bust alone, commanding every point of the nave; the Genesis cycles with the Ark and the Tower of Babel; and beside the cathedral the Benedictine cloister: two hundred and twenty-eight paired columns, no two capitals alike, a medieval encyclopaedia carved around a garden. The rooftop terraces add the Conca d'Oro sweeping to the sea.
Visiting
Cathedral entry is regulated around services; cloister and terraces take separate tickets. Allow ninety minutes for the complex, dressed for a place of worship. Afternoon light through the high windows ignites the gold as no artificial lighting can.
Getting there
Monreale sits eight kilometres above Palermo: city buses from the Piazza Indipendenza area, or shared taxis. By car, park below the centre and walk up through the craft shops.

Sit ten minutes in the cloister "reading" the capitals: there is William offering the church to the Virgin, there are acrobats, monsters and grape harvests. Before leaving, the belvedere behind the apse repays you with the whole Conca d'Oro: you will see why Norman kings chose precisely this balcony.
